The cross is a symbol. A symbol of God's ultimate reconcilliation with the estranged man he has created. One should never worship a cross -- i don't know anyone who admit to this anyway.
As with with anything good, it can be used and abused by those who are ignorant and evil minded..
that being said, i hate the commercialization of the cross. I think some catholics go way overboard with it.
Just a note though, most crosses given out by the church is always blessed by the priest.
I think of how those in the NT were blessed by the handkerchiefs that the apostles had. One woman was healed by the touch of Jesus' garments.. I think it is pre-mature for puritans to judge those who wear the cross without knowing how those people really look at the symbolism behind the cross.
