Correct me if i'm wrong, but the Emperor Constantine was a convert of catholic christianity at the time, which means that the catholic church had the support of the state, I would hardly call that a struggle to defend the truth. The catholic church ruled with an iron fist and anyone that protest against her was removed and persecuted.
