My simple understanding of this quote is: once we accept life as difficult, then we can truly live file to the fullest. We all face life in our own unique fashion.
Some of us charge forward, letting the chips fall where they may. While others choose their every step carefully in order to avoid any mishaps.
Yet others of us face life non-challantly, 'Que sera, sera.' (What will be, will be) type of attitude. It is this kind of living that reflects Mr. Peck's observation.
God has given us Free Will. Some people hold on to the idea that life is difficult. So they live life with no care for tomorrow, thus having no regard for others and/or themselves.
While some live life in fear of any difficulties that may arise. Thusly, cheating themselves out of truly experiencing life.
Then there are those who come to the realization and acceptance that life IS difficult. Once this revelation occurs, they are free to concentrate on the wonderful gifts life has to offer.
They dwell on the good times shared with a former love, rather than the heartache from the breakup. They look forward to the next great job, rather than sulk over the lost one. They offer their prayers for those less fortunate, than curse God for their current misfortune.
I remember a billboard that reads: "All roads do not lead to God...so choose carefully".
Therefore, though life is difficult ~ it is how we live it that matters!
When life on earth is over and we stand before the throne of God on judgement day ~ who will be able to say they chose the right road?
God bless you and yours!
